5G Autonomous Driving Summit Held in Suzhou with the World’s Largest 5G+ BDS High-Precision Positioning System Released

On October 22, the 5G Autonomous Driving Summit with the theme “5G New Infrastructure—Smart Driving for A New Future” was held in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, to roll out China’s strategy of developing new infrastructure and actively promote the development of 5G + BDS high-precision positioning and other technologies to empower the autonomous driving industry. During the event, China Mobile released the world’s largest 5G + BDS high-precision positioning system, launched China’s collaboration project on 5G new infrastructure for vehicles and roads, and kicked off China’s first 5G unmanned bus project with normalized operations.

It is reported that this 5G+ BDS high-precision positioning system provides high-precision positioning services with accuracy measuring in sub-meters, centimeters, and millimeters in real time through the 5G network and constitutes an accurate all-weather and all-day time and space service system covering all territories for the transportation sector, encompassing aspects such as vehicle management, coordination of road and vehicles, autonomous driving, and automatic parking and empowering the development of a digital society.

The city-level verification and application of 5G IoV in Suzhou, initiated jointly by China Mobile and the Suzhou Municipal Government, is one of the first projects on 5G new infrastructure for vehicles and roads in the country and the only one of its kind in the Yangtze River Delta. One of the first 5G IoV applications in the country will be built with 224.75 kilometers of regular roads turned into 5G intelligent networked roads, supporting millions of devices or concurrency of tens of millions of pieces of data and realizing access of more than 200,000 users and 150 application scenarios. At the same time, China Mobile also released five application scenarios for 5G autonomous driving that can be implemented, including the Demonstration Zone for Smart Connection, the Smart Expressway, the Automobile Test Field, the Smart Bus and the Connected Unmanned Vehicles.

The 5G unmanned bus is the “first 5G unmanned bus with normalized operations in China” launched jointly by China Mobile and QCraft, its partner for 5G autonomous driving. The first passengers of the Early Bird Program can experience the bus ride for free. With a total distance of the bus route over 4 kilometers, it is currently a 5G unmanned bus running on a public road which covers the largest area in China.

During the summit, branches of China Mobile in Hubei, Sichuan and Inner Mongolia signed agreements for cooperation on 5G autonomous driving respectively with Dongfeng Motor, Sichuan Expressway Construction &Development Group, and Bayan Obo Mining District in Inner Mongolia. The awarding ceremony for the demonstration base on 5G autonomous driving was also held during the summit. Branches of China Mobile in Jiangsu, Fujian, and Jilin will respectively build demonstration bases for 5G autonomous driving with leading customers in the industry including Pioneer (Suzhou) New Infrastructure Technology, Xiamen Public Transportation, and FAW Qiming.

Next, China Mobile will follow the needs of customers and cooperate with partners in this ecosystem to promote the joint discovery of demand, joint product innovation, joint project delivery, and joint value creation and spare no effort in promoting the development of the 5G autonomous driving industry.
